How-to: Connect directly to SQL Server, MySQL, Sybase and other database types

You can connect directly to a database in SQLMerger by entering connection information on the Database tab. This enables you to connect directly to e.g. SQL Server, Access, Sybase and MySQL databases.

Alternatively you can connect to a database in SQLMerger by using ODBC aliases.

Do:

1. Select the Database tab and enter connection information.

First you select the type of database. If you select "Microsoft SQL Server" you will then see edits like "Server name" etc. below the first drop down edit. In the example we will connect to a database residing on the same computer as the one we use, hence we enter "(local)" as the "Server name". This is the way to tell SQL Server the name of the computer that the database is running on. If it is the computer at hand, "(local)" is a shortcut for identifying this. You also enter the database name. We will use "AdventureWorks", which is a demo database that comes with SQL Server. We already attached this database to the database server.

The "Database" connections tab, where you enter connection information for the source and target databases.

2. Click the "Connected" check box, to actually make the connection.

When connected, the project is automatically populated with tables of the databases.

3. To see some data click the "Merge" tab and the [Open Target] button.

The table "EmployeeAddress" data.

Tip:

Saving your project lets you open the tables in a few clicks the next time.
